The high-pressure fuel pump is driven by the camshaft of your engine and can be a common source of CEL's and limp mode conditions. The common failures of this style of high-pressure fuel pump include:
- Failure of the fuel quantity control valve causing pressure faults on the high-pressure side of the fuel system, you will see an SAE P0001 fault for this failure
- Internal leaks that cause fuel to contaminate the engine oil resulting in fully negative short-term and long-term fuel trim corrections
A direct injection high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is a critical component in modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. Unlike traditional fuel pumps, it boosts fuel pressure to extremely high levels (often over 2,000 psi) so fuel can be directly injected into the combustion chamber. This enables better fuel atomization, improved efficiency, and higher power output. The HPFP is typically driven by the camshaft and works in tandem with a low-pressure fuel pump. Over time, wear, contamination, or internal failure can lead to drivability issues.
